Violence Threats Force Milford Schools Closed

Milford Delaware faced renewed school closure after telephoned threats of violence if Negro students attended the previously all white Milford High School. Dr Raymond C Dobbs announced earlier that classes would reopen but the board postponed teaching to ensure safety as police guarded the building.

U S Will Not Prosecute Long Beach Police

After months of inquiry the U S Justice Department said it would not prosecute the Long Beach Police Department for tactics called police state methods by the Supreme Court. The Irvine case and California procedures were cited, with critics noting entry without a warrant and microphone surveillance. The decision drew mixed reaction from officials and supporters of the Irvine ruling.

Newhall Blaze Drives Near Two Hospitals on Divide

AP reports a brush and timber fire near Newhall crossed the Santa Clara Divide into the San Gabriel foothills. About 80 acres burned with 550 firefighters on scene and 100 Zuni and Bapi specialists flown in from the Southwest. Veterans Hospital and Olive View Sanitarium lie 1 to 2 miles from the edge as firefighters push to contain the blaze.

Coast Highway Fog Crash Kills Man in Huntington Beach

In dense fog on Coast Highway west of Huntington Beach a head on collision killed Wilfred John Denna Je, 28, and seriously injured his wife Hazel, 49. The other driver, Craig Allen, 20, Camp Pendleton, survived with serious injuries. Denna Je and Hazel were en route to Inglewood to meet his father. Police untangled the traffic jam with Newport Beach officers assisting.

Former British Prime Minister Clement Attlee arrived in Montreal from Vancouver en route to London after a West Coast overnight flight. He appeared tired as he stepped from the plane and was scheduled to depart for London by air that night.

L A Couple Perishes in Fire at Colton

A Los Angeles couple died early today in a Colton house fire where they were visiting the home of Joseph Young Jr. 73 and his wife Eileen. Fire Chief Nick Carter said Mrs Young dropped a cigarette on an overstuffed chair, starting the blaze that trapped her in the living room and her husband in an adjoining bedroom while Young Sr. was away.

Sailors Press Indoor Pool and Gym for Armed Services YMCA

More than two thousand sailors urged the City Council to add an indoor pool and gym to the new Armed Services YMCA planned for West Beach. Parachutes Save 15 Chaplains in Burning Airplane

Fifteen chaplains from Long Beach and nearby areas parachuted from a Fire damaged Air Force C46 near Newhall. The group, en route to a Civil Air Patrol conference in Sacramento, landed safely minutes before the plane crashed on the Los Angeles City Prison Farm. Names include Rev. Arthur H. Atkins and Rev. Lertis I. Milett among others. All landed in shirtsleeves and prayed during the crisis as the crew also bailed out before the craft burned.

Two Prisoners Escape Fort MacArthur Guard Disarmed

Authorities throughout the Southland sought two prisoners after they overpowered an armed guard and escaped from Fort MacArthur Mon. Private John E. Ross aged 25 and Anastacio Ruiz aged 18 fled the fort following disarming the guard during a work detail. The other two prisoners did not join the escape. Both men were in fatigue uniforms with the initial B.
