Hotel Man Testifies in $8,000 Bribe Case

Riverside Palm Springs hotel owner testifies in bribery trial that Harold Alt MacKenzie paid $8,000 under the table for a liquor license in 1952. Dewey Metzdorf says a woman phoned October 25 1952 offering the license price and an envelope with the money was collected the next day. The license was issued December 18 1952. MacKenzie faces two counts of accepting bribes, including the $8,000 claimed by Metzdorf and $2,000 from George Strebe of the Doll House Palm Springs. Strebe is expected to testify when trial resumes Monday before Superior Judge John Gebbert. MacKenzie, former liquor control officer for Riverside Orange and San Bernardino counties, is free on bond pending appeal of an Orange County conviction. Prosecutors plan to call Mrs Mickey Jones as a key witness. The pawned jewelry linked to the case is valued at $9,000. Scopes for the defense claim the items were bought for about $50 each.
