In Santa Ana on a Tuesday a 12 year old boy was shot and killed during an argument with a friend on a porch. The rifle, a .30-30 given to the victim's father Marine Reserve Bennie Sublett, discharged when the boy aimed it at his companion. Navy Officers Hear Depot Merger Costs at Los Angeles Hearing
Navy officers testified that Secretary of the Navy Thomas favors moving operations from the San Pedro depot to Long Beach Naval Shipyard. The hearing before the House Governmental Affairs Committee's military operations subcommittee criticized the Navy's presentation as very poor and questioned predicted civilian job cuts and costs. Adm. Parks claimed 395 jobs would vanish and said the move would cost 232,100, down from earlier estimates of 820,000 and 3,444,200. Rep. Holifield said no further hearings are planned, with a preliminary report due in 10 days and a full committee meeting in January.
