A massive wildfire in the Angeles National Forest continues out of control, destroying about 6909 acres of watershed land south of Big Pines. Fire chief Marty Grace says containment could take two to three days, as winds ease and firefighters backfire to halt the blaze toward Big Pines. Crew of 600 firefighters and 100 Native American personnel assist, with air drops and supplies by Forest Service planes.

Marines Find Pendleton Boy Dead in Pond
An eight year old, Danny Walker, was found dead in a pond near De Luz rocks at Camp Pendleton after a three day search by Marines. He disappeared Wednesday while playing near the pond with neighbors. The body was recovered Friday night by Marines in a rowboat as engineers drained the pond. His mother Virginia Alter and playmates said he went to look for frogs along the pond edge. His father, S/Sgt Charles Wall, was returning from Japan with the Third Marine Division.

East German police fire on folk heading west
