Hurricanes Edna battered East coast with 135 mph winds

The hurricane Edna, fifth of the season, struck the northeast seaboard with up to 135 mph winds. It caused at least 13 indirect deaths and prompted mass evacuations from inland areas previously hit by Carol. Power and communications were disrupted across New York, Long Island, and New England, with tens of thousands losing electricity and damage running into hundreds of millions.

Japan Braces as Typhoon Threatens Okinawa and Japan

A dangerous typhoon, spawned in the Central Pacific, plowed toward Okinawa and Japan, with winds near 1070 miles per hour as it tracked north-northwest at about eight miles per hour. U S weather units warned Kushiro in southern Japan could face the storm by Monday. American aircraft crews reported fierce gusts while Japanese forecasters tracked the advancing system.

Vessel Aground on San Clemente Island

Coast Guard reports a trawler near San Clemente Island aground at the southern end of the island. The fishing boat Spitfire warned of danger as lines and attempts to board were seen, but the crew were not in peril.

Washington AP reports Senator McCarthy claimed a perfect right to call Senator Flanders senile in reply to obscenities directed at him during cross examination by the Senate committee. Arboit Ennie Arbol age 89 head football coach at St Anthony High School died suddenly of a heart attack at his home 325 Olive Ave He was a popular mentor to Southland schools and a former Notre Dame athlete who came to Longoria with his family in 1931 He coached Spalding Institute alumni and led teams to league titles His death followed the passing of Tack Bouchard another former St Anthony coach Survivors include seven children and his widow Dolntes The loss comes amid a period of Chicago area prep coaching changes with Arrhoit's death noted in local sports circles.

Fire tears through Los Angeles restaurant walls

A fire at Perine's Restaurant in Los Angeles caused extensive damage to the bar and dining room and destroyed many valuable paintings. Owner Alexander Perine estimated the loss at 250000. In a separate incident, two bandits escaped with 18000 after a clash with two messengers for a clothing agency watched by a crowd.

Rat Pack Attack Leaves 17-Year-Old Near Death in Compton

In Compton two youths were attacked by a Rat Pack gang early this morning. Raymond Gomez, 17, was taken to Los Angeles General Hospital with grave injuries after being stabbed with knives and struck with lead pipes near 3100 Willowbrook Ave. His companion Trinidad Orteza, 18, was hospitalized with less severe injuries. The incident occurred around 12:40 AM as they walked with Gomez’s home near E With It and 22nd Street. Authorities held the suspects after the assault. one attacker reportedly shouted insults before leaping from a car to strike Gomez and Orteza.

Zero-32 blasts off after wild chase in California

Gorn Pulkradek, 20, of Bellflower, fled a Norwalk sheriff's station call, speeding to 95 mph on Lakewood Blvd. CHP noted his canvas-top windbreak and collision with Virginia Lansdale in Rosemead. Pulkradek claimed a prior head wound, was booked for evading arrest, reckless driving, red-light running, and drunk driving.

Pilot Fled Reds Shot At In Chicago Area

Franciszek Jarecki, 23, former Polish air force pilot who flew a Soviet MIG in 1953, says assassins in a black sedan peppered his car with glass and fired as he drove toward Chicago. He believes threats and letters calling him an American spy are linked. he escaped injury and reports the incident occurred on Route 12 about 29 miles northwest of Chicago.

Interceptors Find Nothing In Northern California Armada Sighting

The Air Force probes a reported armada of 200 aircraft observed near Redding in Shasta County. Two youths and a Forest Service lookout reported 219 planes flying south between 8 10 and 8 34 p m. Jets searched the area and found nothing unusual as investigators pursue possible explanations.
