San Francisco girl leaps to death after lover's suicide
Patricia McCarthy, 18, climbed eight stories of a downtown hotel to die, apparently to join her married lover Charles Waters who leapt from the Golden Gate Bridge the day before. Waters’s car was found abandoned on the bridge, with a trail of footprints in foggy conditions. Waters, 24, had a small daughter and had reconciled with his spouse two weeks earlier. Patricia’s mother cited the lovers’ pact and a last cigarette and makeup fix before the fatal step. A white purse near the body contained clippings about Waters’s life and death. The incident follows a separate legal decree involving state tidelands and oil revenue, unrelated to the deaths.
