Calif led U S in Fatalities as Cannery Strike Opens

California leads the nation in fatalities as 4,500 workers walk out in the Pacific coast cannery strike beginning at 6 am. Union president James Waugh reports over 100 picketers and 1,300 more prepared to join. Ten canneries affected as contract expired, with Harbor Canning and California Seafood meeting terms. Old wage scales were 1.80 for men and 1.60 for women.

Forest Fires Threaten Redwoods Across Northern California

SAN FRANCISCO AP Six forest fires burned uncontrolled across six sites in Northern and Central California, scorching over 50 000 acres of timber. Fire crews, including 3 000 men from as far as Montana, fought to control the flames as the Klamath National Forest blaze neared Yreka and threatened Klamath River buildings. In Sequoia National Forest a 10 000 acre blaze neared the General Grant tree and Sequoia Lake. Humboldt County fires blackened over 21 000 acres with wildlife affected, while other spots burned across Petrolia and Fruitland areas. Fire season described as the worst in years.

Grateful Son Alive Faces Long Road After Fire

Mrs. H. L. Cain recalls Friday night when her 16 year old son Howard was critically burned while fighting a brush fire at Tal Habra Heights, a blaze that killed five. Howard had been at a county probation forestry camp in La Verne for about nine weeks and injured his back when a tree branch struck him during firefighting. The mother, tearful, emphasizes he did not commit a crime but ran away to learn forestry.

Man Saves Son Then Is Struck by Car in Long Beach

A Long Beach man shielded his 10 year old son from a careening vehicle at the Vista and Loma Avenue intersection, but was pinned on the porch by the car and critically injured. Relatives said the father, William Hunt, pushed his son to safety before leaping toward the porch and being struck. He suffered serious injuries and was treated at St. Mary’s Community Hospital. Eight others were injured in a three day Labor Day period with no fatalities locally.

Reds Assert Nine Americans Free to Return Home

China notified the United States that nine American civilians detained in China are now free to return home. Two more could leave at once if they request exit permits and a third could depart within two to three months. Talks since August 1 aim to release 41 Americans imprisoned or denied exit permits, with continued secret discussions scheduled.
