Nail Removed From Skull Heals For Veteran In Army Hospital
Fort Logan Cal Sept 7 Virgil Gomez a 27 year old former Japanese prisoner of war showed doctors he was improving after an operation to remove a two inch nail driven into his skull by a sadistic guard in 1943. He was captured with the remnants of his 200th Coast Artillery unit in the Philippines. Doctors expressed elation at his progress but the hospital manager warned the improvement could be misleading and said it would be about 10 days before danger might pass and several weeks to judge permanence.

Considerations include larger fats and oils exports, persuading the Army to buy more for occupation areas, and government sugar purchases for foreign relief. Secretary Clinton P. Anderson warned Europe faces a harsh winter with reduced exportable grain and tighter belts, noting a looming food shortage worsened by a weak yarn crop and dollar shortage abroad.
