The Business and Professional Women's Club in Norwalk announces participation in National Business Women’s Week from September 23 to 29. Miss Jonina Summers, local president, issued the notice detailing events and activities planned for the observance.
In San Francisco on September 5, a disputed wage and union demands clash at the Douglas plant. Union backing seeks retroactive raises, a union shop, and a new wage plan as production on the C-124 remains the plant’s focus. Negotiations fail with workers voting to strike once contracts expire.
California Heights residents petitioned for school bus service to Wilson High. City Lines will run a special bus from Carson Street and Cherry Avenue to Wilson, departing 7 50 a m and arriving 8 15 a m, routing west on Carson to Orange Avenue then south to Wardlow Road and on to 20th Street and Ximena Avenue.
BRUSSELS Sept 5 The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions ICFTU requests inclusion of the right to collective bargaining in the Japanese peace treaty. ICFTU is an anti communist trade union body formed against the World Confederation of Trade Unions.
Police cleared Charles H. Broeske after questioning him about the slaying of Nina Marie Rice at a hamburger stand. He was wounded by officers when found in his Maywood car with a rifle, while ballistics showed the weapon used was not the same.
Anderson Indiana September 5 sheriff Joe L Brogdon asked merchants for donations toward a funeral for Mike Bertinetto a 72 year old Italian who lived 40 years in Madison County Jail due to being without a home. He came from Milan as an interpreter and worked for railroads and American Steel and Wire Co. A 1910 mill accident injured him leaving memory problems and preventing entry to institutions. Authorities could not locate relatives.
California lawmakers divide by convictions not party labels, says John Knauft of the California Manufacturers Association at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast in the Wilton Hotel. He notes many laws target public interest, some waste time, and urges businessmen to back legislators serving statewide best interests. Fred S. Dean installs Frank LaChance of Southern California Edison as forum chairman for three months, succeeding Walter Wehner of United Air Lines.
U N forces drove Reds from a ridge controlling the valley as South Korean marines moved near the Punchbowl. The Communist assault on multiple points was repelled after hours of fighting, with Allied artillery and air support mounting pressure. Seaborne and air units bombarded eastern front positions as U N ground forces consolidated gains.
Mountain Home Idaho September 5 seven air force fliers stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base died when a B 25 bomber on a routine training flight crashed one fourth mile from the runway. Public relations said victims’ names await next of kin notification.
A seven man crew perished when a Navy patrol plane plunged into the sea and exploded during submarine operations about 30 miles east of Montauk Point, New York. The aircraft, attached to Patrol Squadron Five at Jacksonville, Florida, was temporarily based at Quonset Naval Air Station.
In Rogers Park Anchorage a twin eng Cessna crashed after takeoff toward Seward, killing five aboard and injuring several. Pilot Norm Maither died after heroic attempt to avert houses. Four passengers from Christianson Air Service also perished, with two later identified as military: a captain and his wife.
In Los Angeles on September 22 General Hospital announced a new monthly baby total for August, reaching 456 births to beat July’s record by 10. The August tally split into 425 boys and 431 girls with 13 sets of twins.
