Sacramento AP Earl Warren refused to say if he will serve out the remaining 16 months of his term after announcing he will not seek re election in 1954. He called his written statement final and declined to discuss endorsements or future plans until officially disclosed.
A sharp earthquake near Paso Robles rattled windows and shook buildings with an undulating motion just before 9 Thursday night. No damage was reported.
Florence Chadwick abandoned her attempted round trip across the English Channel after 16 hours and 7 minutes in cold waters near Wissant France. She later reached shore briefly to eat, then returned to swim again before exiting about 2.25 miles from the start. She had earlier set a record for the outward leg in 14 hours 42 minutes and faced jellyfish stings on the eastward leg. The effort sought to surpass Tom Blower’s 15 hours 31 minutes English Channel record after many postponements. Official observer Freddy Overton supported acceptance of Chadwick’s time.
An advance guard of 13 U.S. B-47 Stratojet bombers crossed the Atlantic to England as 15 more depart Fairford for 4500 mile nonstop flights to MacDill Field Florida. They join the 306th Bomb Wing ending a 90 day England training. 15 more depart Saturday and final 15 Sunday. The 305th Bomb Wing from Limestone Maine arrived Brize Norton after a 2925 mile flight. first B 47 landed 10:48 GMT.

Charles Chuck Carr a 26 year old Long Beach carpenter surrendered to Compton police claiming an eight hundred dollar bogus check spree was caused by gambling losses in Gardena. He told Det Wabben he wrote twenty seven bad checks in two weeks totaling small sums. Carr faced Compton Municipal Court with bail set at fifteen hundred dollars and a preliminary hearing scheduled. He said gambling losses led to the check writing and related crime across Long Beach Compton Norwalk and Van Nuys. His family remained away with relatives for Labor Day weekend.
Four persons were injured today when a train broke apart and crashed backward into a signal bridge in London. The incident disrupted service while emergency crews attended the scene and investigated the wreckage.
Bellflower motorist Robert G. Sly aged 42 of Arkansas Avenue was jailed six months after pleading guilty to drunk driving speeding running a traffic signal and driving with a suspended license He was clocked at 50 mph near Crackup Corner between Willow and 23rd Streets Judge Frank C Charvat noted the corner is dangerous and several fatalities have occurred His additional sentences including 10 days for speeding five days for running a red light and a $200 fine run concurrently with the drunk driving term The term will be served in city jail
The National Safety Council urged extreme caution during the holiday weekend as it estimated 440 deaths from traffic within 78 hours from 6 p.m. tonight to midnight Monday. The council noted a rate of over five deaths per hour and recommended reducing speed by 10 miles per hour, checking mirrors, and yielding to others to lower the toll.
President Eisenhower received treatment for a bruised elbow during a Denver stop. He and Dr. Howard M. Snyder had the elbow cared for on the way to Lowry Air Force Base, as part of his routine since arriving nearly a month ago.

SAN FRANCISCO One hundred four sick and wounded American prisoners returned home today aboard the hospital ship Haven after a voyage from Korea. Ten litter patients, many with tuberculosis from prison camps, were first ashore as the Haven docked at Fort Mason. The event followed two earlier repatriation ships with more prisoners en route.
A two month premature baby boy, born by Caesarean section minutes after his mother's death from bulbar Pelio, survived only 20 hours. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Green, Constance 25, died in Evanston hospital Thursday night. Siblings Thomas 2 and Kathleen 1 remain.
The Army will for the first time in over fifty years permit liquor by the drink and bottle to commissioned and noncommissioned officers at open messes.
