No Week-end Negotiations Oil Strike Will Continue
A three day old strike against six major oil refineries will continue over the weekend with no end in sight. Union president A Knight denied progress toward a new contract while companies hold a 12 1/2 cent hourly wage offer. A back to work movement was rejected earlier, but rumors of near settlement persist. Pickets clash at Standard refinery and a dispatch from Martinez notes a mural of anti union activity. At San Pedro, CIO official John Brewer resigned in protest of Texas Co tankers being manned under orders from Curran as the union denounces the move.

Councilman Explains Two Proposed Oil Amendments
Councilman Raymond C. Kealer pledges passage of amendments U and V on the November 2 ballot to resolve revenue uses from tideland wells and create a harbor reserve fund. Amendment U would allow general tideland improvements, while Amendment V would divert 66 percent of harbor district well revenues into a protective fund for future harbor development. The measure follows a 1946 tideland fund split and a 1947 charter change and a California Supreme Court ruling on revenue use. A harbor fund now totals about 26 million dollars with current income from wells around 25 thousand dollars yearly, suggesting ample funds for future development.

An accord on a projected foreign trade zone in the area emerged at a San Pedro City Hall hearing by a special Assembly committee. Port Manager E. J. Amar urged locating the zone at Los Angeles outer harbor for Harbor Department facilities, as the committee canceled today’s Long Beach hearing to continue harbor area tours.
