Ocean iAlp Discovered in North Pacific by Coast Survey
The tallest undersea mountain in the north Pacific was announced by Captain Robert A. Studds of the U S Coast and Geodetic Survey. The underwater alp, about 11 500 feet high, was recorded Oct 3 on Path Finder 800 miles west of Seattle during a Bristol Bay Alaska survey. The find aids navigators and seismologists noting a seamount collapse in the Alaskan Gulf in April 1546 spurred a deadly tidal wave from the Aleutians to Hawaii.
