Farm Parity Plan Faces Early Capitol Hill Pushback
Washington Oct 8 The administration's plan to modernize farm parity prices for government price supports met swift opposition on Capitol Hill. Representative Pace questioned the new formula as a reversal of parity principles. Representative Hill warned of a real battle ahead to change parity, predicting little actual change. The current parity aims to match purchasing power from 1909 to 1914, guiding price supports. The Agriculture Department proposes raising parity for meat and dairy while lowering it for grains and cotton, with a long run goal of an organized abundant food system. The department urged future Congresses to ensure people get what they want to eat and suggested food stamps or coupons to buffer shortages, if needed. The revision would alter base periods used in calculations.
