Trieste settlement ends long Italy Yugoslavia feud

Italy and Yugoslavia signed a plan dividing the Trieste free territory, ending a nine year dispute. The accord, backed by the United States and Britain, allows withdrawal of 3,000 American and 2,000 British troops and sets Zone A for Italy and Zone B for Yugoslavia with a free port of Trieste serving multiple nations.

Newsman Rescues Man Threatening Jump From Nashville Bridge

Nashville Tennessean reporter John Seigenthaler wrestled 55 year old Gene Bradford Williams back from a 100 foot fall from a downtown bridge over the Cumberland River after 40 minutes of questions and a tense stand off. Williams had written his son letters and complained of unemployment and exile from relatives before declaring intent to jump. he was later jailed on a lunacy warrant. Seigenthaler had previously saved a man in a prior incident, but that case involved a missing person later found alive.

2nd Division to Land in Seattle Thursday

A 2nd Division unit with 1,059 men and officers and 3,418 total American troops will arrive Thursday aboard the Navy transport Marine Phoenix. A civic welcome and parade through Seattle are planned. The division, much rebuilt since Korea, will be stationed again at Fort Lewis after earlier actions in Morea.

DiMaggio Divorces Monroe Filed in Santa Monica Court

Hollywood AP Marilyn Monroe filed for divorce from Joe DiMaggio in Santa Monica Superior Court asserting mental anguish and no fault by the plaintiff. He also admitted setting 12 brush fires in Los Nietos area in three months. He was booked on felonious burning and turned to juvenile authorities.

Woman Balloonist dies in record attempt off Danish coast

Paulette Weber, a 54 year old French balloonist, tried to recapture the world endurance record for women. Her balloon fell into the North Sea about 10 miles off the Danish coast and she was killed. Her body was found Monday night in the wreckage. She sought to beat the record of 22 hours 30 minutes set recently by a Russian woman.

Fifth Attack Targets L B Man Carl Jennings

Carl Jennings, 79, a pensioner near Chestnut Ave, says a fifth assault occurred as two men in Navy uniforms knocked him unconscious during a Monday night robbery attempt. He bears a deep scalp laceration and skinned knuckles, recalling earlier incidents and his wish not to be a troublemaker.

GOP Leaders to Meet Friday in Denver Conference

President Eisenhower called for a Friday Denver meeting with House and Senate Republican leaders to discuss political strategy and the international situation. The White House said the session with the President and Vice President Nixon precedes a nationwide telecast pep talk for Republican precinct workers. The NSC policy staff will also meet in Denver in what was called a routine gathering with no emergency cited.

UCLA ROTC Loyalty Oath Balkers Drill On Campus

A special UCLA ROTC unit of 21 students who refused unqualified loyalty statements will continue to drill on campus. Of them 5 refused to sign loyalty certificates and 16 signed on a qualified basis. They will train in civilian clothes and not receive military credit though still meeting graduation requirements. There are about 2100 ROTC students at UCLA. Certificates become required for the first time this fall at colleges receiving ROTC funding. The 16 who signed on a qualified basis cited prior ties to some of 250 organizations listed by the attorney general as subversive. Identification of the students must come from Sixth Army HQ in San Francisco or ROTC HQ in Montgomery, Alabama.

Norwalk Boy Dies Under Car Wheels

A Norwalk boy named Denny Bass, age 12, was killed when struck by a car driven by Ernest M. Rivera in Norwalk near Leffingwell Road and Benfield Avenue. Witnesses said the boy darted across the road and fell under the wheels. Rivera was not held after the incident.

Navy to authorize first atomic carrier go ahead

Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson said the Defense Department may authorize a preliminary go ahead for the world’s first atomic carrier as the Navy plans to pair powered aircraft with atomic submarines. He spoke to reporters returning from Denver Monday.
