Guinea Pig Bowditch Struggles After POW Ordeal

Cpl. Arthur Bowditch a 21 year old soldier from Long Beach who was held as a prisoner by Chinese Communists for 28 months and labeled a human guinea pig went AWOL from a San Diego Naval Hospital. He was picked up at his home in San Pedro and later taken to Fort MacArthur Army Hospital while Army officials said no charges would be filed. Bowditch cited near mania from confinement as his reason for leaving and noted he spent the week at home awaiting transfer to Fitzsimons Army Hospital.

Families Facing Evacuation After Seal Beach Flooding

Seal Beach endured its worst ocean onslaught as breakers overwhelmed a sand barrier and threatened more than 20 apartments. Water three feet deep trapped behind the barrier near Jeth Street to the jetty, with salt water reaching Ocean Boulevard. Residents prepared to evacuate if basements flooded, while most doorways remained dry and upper floors avoided major damage.

Man Who Shot s Three Gets Life

Raymond J. Ross, 33, was sentenced to life for killing his wife Mollie 29 his father in law Albert Miles 46 and his sister Nellie Hall 45 in a shooting spree after his reconciliation plea was rejected. He was found guilty of two counts of first degree and one of second degree by Superior Judge Thomas L. Ambrose.

Six Firemen Burned as Santa Ana Warehouse Fire Rages

A warehouse at 727 Stafford St in Santa Ana burned, causing losses of at least $7500. Six firemen were lightly burned while fighting the blaze discovered at 10:08 a.m. in a furniture repair shop. Jet Crashes Into River Bridge Sparks Gas Fire

A jet training plane crashed into the Mississippi River bridge in Greenville Mississippi early today breaking a natural gas pipeline and igniting a fire that scorched the structure.
