G O P Proposes 50 Percent Excess-Profits Tax Bet
Washington November 18 Republicans opposing President Truman's excess profits tax plan proposed a substitute to raise more revenue. Rep Reed of New York would let corporations choose either the excess profits tax or a 10 percent increase in the current 45 percent corporate tax, with the excess option at least 50 percent of this year’s earnings. The plan runs through 1952. Doughton backed Reed saying it would shift burden to smaller ventures and safeguard the economy. Hearings continue as the Ways and Means Committee eyes a bill after November 27.
