Anti-Red Quiz Leader Cited by Grand Jury Indicted
Rep. J. Parnell Thames, chair of the House un American activities committee, and former secretary Helen Campbell were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiring to pad payroll in Thames office. The indictment says fictitious employees were created to route salaries to Campbell and her affiliates, with tax returns filed under Campbell in Thames name. Thames, reelected, faces loss of his chairmanship when Democrats assume control. The conspiracy allegedly spanned 1940 to 1945.
