Burglars broke a small church safe at North Long Besch Methodist Church in Cincinnati area, taking 550. They used candles from the altar to illuminate the scene and damaged a larger office safe. Matches found on the church door indicate nocturnal entry Saturday night or early Sunday. The incident was reported by police.
First autumn sprinkles fell on Long Beach as a cold front moved southward, with clearing and sunshine expected later. The 1953 34 season had minimal rainfall to date, traces in LA and Long Beach, while October tied as one of the warmest on record with high sunshine and notes of unusually dry conditions.

Three year old Sandra Fendley vanished from her Hot Springs Arkansas home Saturday afternoon. Neighbors located her sleeping in a mountainous wooded area about a mile from home at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. She is safe at home today.
Martin Larson 12 of Utica Minn died after a head wound from a rifle accident during a hunt near Utica. His friend John Kieselhorst 16 of St Paul kept his fingertip in the wound through a 20 hour vigil to slow bleeding as frost set in and temperatures fell to 25 degrees. He cradled Martin’s head, wrapped him in his shirt, and prayed all night. A doctor noted such wounds often bleed internally from brain pressure rather than external bleeding.

A Shelby County grand jury cleared guard Joseph L. Stone Jr. in the October death of Long Beach Navy man William Ezra Thacker at the penal farm. Thacker, 21, was shot during an escape attempt after stealing $13 from a professor’s daughter. Hard-pressed by escape attempts, the farm reported 69 escapes this year with 39 recaptured. Thacker, a Jordan High School graduate, served eight days of an 11 month sentence.
Secretary Benson moved to enact a contentious reorganizational plan for the Agriculture Department with White House backing. He abolished seven regional soil conservation offices and transferred duties to state offices, while preserving the Soil Conservation Service as a separate agency. Chairman Aiken praised the move despite some opposition.

In Manchester Kentucky a windstorm destroyed the Blue Hole school, leaving 30 pupils without a building. Granddaughter or relative of Mrs. Sarah Collett, known as Aunt Sarah, donated land for a new sturdy brick school. Her son Wilk led parents in protests over the old structure before its collapse. Mrs. Collett offered clear title to county officials for the new school. The 75-year-old widow said the act is her last service to her people.
Security officer Maj. Barrett Margolin said 17 men were dead with eight injured after a blaze on the Norwegian freighter Black Falcon at a South Boston Army base. The fire started in hold Wo. 4 during unloading as the ship was set to sail for Europe. The toll could rise to 21. The incident followed an earlier Leyte aircraft carrier explosion nearby.
Seattle dispatch reports Gen. W. C. Darby arrived with the Navy transport bringing 41 829 passengers from the Far East.
