Alien Influx Bill Delayed in Senate
In Washington on May 28 a refugee bill cleared a major hurdle by setting a two year top limit of 200000. The measure was set aside as the Senate addressed other matters, with the amendment passing 40 to 33. Further changes remain before a final vote. Senator Tydings proposed groundwork for an international conference on displaced persons. Senator Saltonstall urged revisions to farmers and Baltic state origin requirements amid opposition claiming refugees are all Communists or thieves.

Cut in Europe Aid Forecast
Washington May 28 UP The Air Force expansion and other new arms programs will cut into recovery shipments to Europe, an Economic Cooperation Administration official predicted today. Glenn H. Craig said Europe’s request for aluminum, steel, copper and industrial materials may have to be curtailed due to national defense drains on U S production. He noted the quarter ending June 30 will shift shipments of many industrial items and that foreign exporters expect a big trade upturn.
