Truman Eyes Lengthy Session to Push New Program
President Truman signaled Congress may endure a sweltering Washington summer to pass most of his broad legislative agenda before adjournment, with White House and Senate leaders disputing the expected timing and scope. The plan includes tax boosts, health insurance, civil rights, social security expansion, and farm measures, while reorganization at the State Department aims to ease Secretary Acheson’s workload through new deputy undersecretaries and five assistant secretaries.
