The Army asks through official channels for more air power including new planes to track missiles and to transport troops and cargo. It would grant the field arm unconditional command of some aviation in training and combat, seeking broader aviation authority beyond the 1952 pact limiting Army aircraft to under 5,000 pounds and 50 to 100 miles deep.

Thames Debutante Party Ends With Fully Dressed Swim
The social debutantes Felicity and Penelope Drew, aged 18, attended a Chelsea party aboard the Royal Princess in London. Champagne flowed as guests encouraged a fully clothed swim in the Thames. A bowler-hatted guest leaped in for a bet, was retrieved by a lifeboat, and later rescued by Sea Scouts. A second daring swimmer followed, and police investigated as the craft drifted off course.
