Curbs Urged on Foreign Brokers
Washington May 25 Congressional investigators urged tighter curbs on foreign brokers to curb American and foreign grain speculators evading a profits tax. A special House committee led by Rep. August H. Andresen reported that some Americans use foreign brokers to dodge capital gains taxes and that brokers abroad need not disclose client names on U S exchanges. The panel proposed two moves: require foreign brokers to list customers with domestic brokers and tax all capital gains of resident and nonresident aliens from transactions in the United States. The committee noted 82 of 581 registered U S brokers handled 1946 to 1947 business, with estimated capital gains of 64.5 to 129 million dollars, none taxed.
