Senate Considers Speedy Tanker Fleet Plan
A Senate armed services panel debated a private build plan for four fleets of twenty 25,000 ton high speed tankers capable of 18 knots. The Navy would charter the vessels for 10 years, shifting all but ten WWII tankers to reserve and using the new ships within two years. Estimated charter costs total 427 million, with potential savings if rates fall below 4,500 dollars per deadweight ton.
