Living Costs Drop Pushes Allen Bill to Full Assembly

In Sacramento Long Beach failed to block the Allen Bill as Ways and Means approved moving about 160 million dollars in titles and oil money to the state. The measure heads to the Assembly floor, amid city efforts to refer it to an interim committee for further study. Also, April living costs eased to 114.2, the lowest in nearly two years, with lower automobile prices and rent contributing to the drop.

Incense and Roses Spark Fire at Gardenia Home

A box of rose petals drying for perfume overheated near a heater at Floyd and Irene Youngker’s 6766 Gardenia Ave. causing a small blaze that damaged a chair and rug in the living room. The smoke woke the occupants early today.

Bank Robbers Steal 90 000 From Jacksonville Bank

Four armed men robbed the First National Bank of Jacksonville in Alabama after abducting a bank official from his home. They bound employees, moved cash to a car, and fled, leaving an elderly signaler unhurt. The loot range was reported around 85 to 90 thousand dollars, insured, with no injuries. Police set roadblocks as the car was found abandoned near Germania Springs. The case involved Jesse Wood and Dan Gray, with Wood’s family held briefly during the crime.

U S Experts Study Salk Vaccine Dosage

Washington AP a group of medical and scientific experts met at NIH to study Salk vaccine dosages and whether to suspend inoculations during polio season. Intracutaneous or subcutaneous injection methods were evaluated. Dr Jonas Salk, present, preferred muscular injection but others considered dose reduction to stretch supplies. Uncertainty over vaccine availability expected to extend into next week. The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis said vaccine should be available by June.

Prison Sentence for Pvt Marchuk Who Shared Secrets

Pvt William T Marchuk of Norristown Pa held captive in Russia six years was sentenced by an Army court martial to 12 years in prison for giving U S military secrets to the Soviet Union. The court also imposed a dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay.

Angler Dies After Heart Attack Aboard Boat

Andrew Jackson Barnes 84 of Garden Grove died from a heart attack after boarding a yellow tail sportfishing boat at 3 am. His companion Harold McGuire, also of Garden Grove, said a last joke before Barnes collapsed. He died at County Hospital. Deputy Coroner Jesse Casnale listed the cause as a heart attack.

Assembly OKs 750000 for Tin Can Beach purchase

An Assembly committee Thursday night approved a 750000 appropriation for state purchase of Bolsa Chica Beach, also called Tin Can Beach, in Orange County. The plan covers a three mile strip between Sunset and Huntington Beach, to be cleaned and improved. The Bolsa Chica Gun Club and Bolsa Land and Water Co. hold stock in the property, and the vote came from the Conservation and Public Works Committee.

Woman gives birth to eighth child alone in Florida home

Titusville report says Mrs. Ellerbe W. Carter Sr. gave birth to her eighth baby without a doctor, while finishing chores and relaxing with a whisky drink. Her husband was at work, a maid assisted briefly, and a family friend witnessed the birth and postnatal routine.
