Want-Ad Killer Executed in San Quentin Gas Chamber

Anthony Zilbauer, 53, was put to death in the San Quentin gas chamber after being convicted of the pistol slaying of Andrew Kmiec, a Los Angeles insurance adjuster, during a sale demonstration near Norwalk on November 21, 1953. He talked through the night but made no final statement, stating he believed he was improperly convicted. Kept calm, he did not respond as the chamber took his life seven minutes after the hood was sealed. Evidence at trial included testimony from Dolly Ann McCormick who said she saw him shoot Kmiec. Zilbauer’s arrest followed investigators tracing his wife to her mother’s home, and he faced charges in Whittier before San Quentin.
