Russia Recognizes Israel as State of Israel
Moscow May 18. Russia became the second major power to recognize the new Hebrew state of Israel after the United States did so last week followed by Guatemala. Foreign Minister Molotov sent a note to Moshe Shertok stating the Soviet Union officially recognizes Israel and its provisional government. The Soviet government hopes the creation of a sovereign state will strengthen peace and security in Palestine and the Near East and seeks friendly ties with Israel. Some London political circles view the move as broader than the U.S. declaration.
