Knight Urges Enactment of Tax Bill in California
Governor Knight presses a 3 million tax program claiming it would prevent insolvency amid a looming deficit. He backs a 3 cent cigarette tax and higher levies on beer liquor and horse racing to shore up revenue, warns a failure would force 160 million in new taxes next year. A 62 percent return favored taxing luxuries in a Southern Alameda County poll. Knight supports preserving the rainy day fund and would reconvene the Legislature if water talks stall.
