New York May 10 AP The prosecutor in a graft trial involving five New York police officers said he received a telephoned threat hours after the brother of the chief prosecution witness was beaten. Assistant Corporation Counsel Victor J Herwitz cited a caller who said You son of a you better lay off. Jackie Gross 24 was attacked on a Manhattan street with two men warning his brother to stop testifying about payoffs to city police officials. The case links to graft allegations involving 100 inner ranking officers and a $20 million bookmaking empire. Jacky Gross was placed under police guard and Herwitz vowed the threats would not deter the investigation or testimony. The brother Harry Gross remains under protection and the witness, Marty Gross, seeks a reduced sentence in a separate case.

Fights Free on Last Mile Denies Guilts
In Canton Ohio on May 10 1950 convict James C Edwards fought guards as they prepared to strap him in the electric chair after being sentenced for killing Mrs Helena Teubener a 64 year old widow beaten during a Canton home robbery attempt. Edwards shouted I didnt do nothin to no one and fought the deputies before being overpowered and strapped in the chair. He died shortly after the execution began.
