Lack of One Vote Stalls Widows Bill
In Sacramento a bill to raise death benefits for widows of workers killed in industrial accidents from 8400 to 16000 failed in the Assembly Insurance and Finance Committee for lack of one vote. Eleven members supported it and five opposed, short of the twelve needed to move to the Assembly floor. Proponents may seek another vote later amid industry opposition over the heavier burden. The panel also defeated a bill to start compensation benefits from the first day of incapacity after seven days of disability, instead of after 49 days.
