Panama Trial Prejudged Says Defense Lawyer
A Panama assembly member allegedly claimed most lawmakers favored convicting impeached President Jose Ramon Guizado before his trial began. Defense attorney Guillermo Marquez said he has witnesses to prove widespread pretrial conviction talk as Guizado faces homicide charges in President Jose Antonio Remon's Jan 2 assassination. The trial entered its sixth day with a defense summation after prosecution rested and sought a 36 year term. Guizado, a Vanderbilt-educated civil engineer, rose from vice president after Remon's murder and was impeached 14 days later amid Ruben Miro’s confession, which Miro later repudiated.

House Panel Advises VA Budget Increase
Washington accord shows House Appropriations Committee recommends 4.465 billion to run the Veterans Administration for the new fiscal year starting July 1. The increase exceeds President Eisenhower’s request by 10.786 million, earmarked for repairing and modernizing older veterans hospitals. The VA share helps fund a larger federal agencies bill, with notable Civil Service Retirement Fund payments and stockpiling aims. The panel praised agencies for tight budgets and ordered priority for older federal workers. The committee trimmed Civil Defense funding and noted no new public housing authorization is included.
