Daylight Radar Ship Guide Tests at Port Begin
Preliminary daylight tests directed at a port pilot used a harbor radarscope to track a Panama flag S S Ensenada near the Long Beach Los Angeles Harbor west entrance. Capt Elmer Engel steered the pilot boat while Capt D Ougland piloted the S S Ensenada. A nearby small craft was mistaken for the pilot boat on the screen, a flaw to be corrected with practice and better reflector quality. Operators and pilot communicated by radiotelephone to compare boat position with the radar readings. Further drills are planned as pilots learn to use radar in low visibility conditions before actual port use.
