Press-Telegram reports observers including Army troops and 20 correspondents in slit trenches four miles from ground zero witness a dramatic atomic test. A blinding flash, heat, and a sweeping dust plume followed by a towering, shifting cloud. Officials say hydrogen burn out as the cloud climbs and grays with age.
Prime Minister Churchill told the House of Commons that Britain would not exchange Edgar Sanders, jailed in Hungary on espionage charges, for Lee Meng a Chinese Red guerrilla held in Malaya. The offer, tied to concessions from the U S government, followed years of thriller diplomacy and linked to Vogeler and Sanders case.
California Governor Earl Warren described today’s nuclear explosion at Yucca Flats as a “terrible sight” that should spur citizens to participate more in civil defense. He spoke seven miles from the blast site, praising Californians’ past work and urging even greater effort.

The Air Force identifies two young airmen Vernon David, 18, of Chicago and Robbie Glover, 20, of Fairfax Oklahoma. They were patrolling an air strip at Anderson Air Force Base when David shot Glover and then killed himself after a quarrel lasting months.
