Sixty miles inside East German territory Soviet MiG-15 fighters attacked two U S F-84 jets near Regensburg Bavaria. Lt Warren G Brown bailed out after his plane was struck, while Lt Donald C Smith landed safely at base. Washington protested to Prague authorities over the incursion 15 miles into the U S occupation zone.

Navy drops Catalina experiment plan after local opposition

Navy abandons plans to build an experimental ordnance station on Catalina Island after strong opposition from Los Angeles area congressmen marine industries and fishermen. Navy Undersecretary Charles Thomas reportedly said the service would look elsewhere amid industry projections of multi million dollar losses and possible deaths of small boating. The reversal drew approval from marine industry leaders who praised the cooperative effort and rapid result.

Vicious snarling dog blocks four apartments on Golden Ave

A German shepherd chained outside a four-unit building on Golden Ave held the entry for over an hour. Custodian Sharkey from the Animal Shelter relocated the animal with help from resident Lila Murrell who finally captured the dog with a rope. The shelter will hold the dog for owner claimants for six days. Mrs. Hansard and Mrs. Stutting reported fear and police involvement during the stand-off.

Secretary General Trygve Lie accused the Soviet Union of pressuring him for opposing Communist aggression in Korea. Bomb detonation wounds two on Oriskany flight deck

Navy reports a dislodged bomb exploded on the carrier Oriskany in Korean waters on March 6 during a landing. Two sailors were killed and 15 others wounded, with five in serious condition. Dead include Airman Thomas Leo McGraw Jr. of Watertown and Airman Thomas M. Yeager of Columbus, Ohio. Families of the dead and injured were notified.

Man Loses Arm to Lion in Ont. Training Cage

SIM CAR Ont Lt nen Hill, wild animal trainer, loses left arm at elbow after an attack by two 250 pound African female lions. The animal had also mauled two other people, with prior injuries including a shoulder to wrist mauling. Police impound the lions, hospital treatment given, and previous incidents noted in Brantford and Irbridge.

Eisenhower Signs Bill to Expand Home Loan Insurance

President Eisenhower signed a bill authorizing up to 1.75 billion dollars in FHA insured loans for maintenance and repair of homes, raising the program ceiling from 1.25 billion to 1.75 billion after the prior funding nearly exhausted. The measure expands the government loan insurance capacity to support housing needs.

California Assembly votes to outlaw draw poker

SACRAMENTO AP The Assembly approved a bill 60 to 4 to outlaw draw poker in California sending it to the Senate where similar efforts stalled previously. Gov Warren backed the measure as Assemblyman Herbert Klockheim led the charge against these so called vicious parlors amid public complaints. Critics urged caution proposing a committee review while several lawmakers opposed the bill citing unproven harms and local conditions.

Grandma Bandit Pleads Guilty to Bank Robberies

Ethel Arata, 33, of Monrovia, known as the Grandma Bandit, pleaded guilty to two bank robbery charges. She admitted robbing the Citizens National Bank Third and Western Los Angeles branch on November 26 and the U S Nations Bank Arcadia branch on December 24, and will be sentenced on April 3. She was captured during the Arcadia holdup.

Ashland Wisconsin report: 2 year old Tommy Marshall shot his 40 year old father Thomas E Marshall 15 times to prevent further abuse of his mother. The juvenile was placed under his mother's custody while authorities investigate. the boy said he acted after threats as the parents, divorced, wrestled in the bedroom and the boy retrieved a 22 caliber pistol.
