Mechanical Heart Used Successfully
PHILADELPHIA March 8 A 41 year old Peter Durning of Bethlehem Pa was kept alive for one hour and 20 minutes with a mechanical heart in an operation hailed as historic by Pennsylvania Hospital and partners. The device took over the right heart side during surgery to clear an obstruction and by pass blood at three liters a minute. Durning died two hours after the machine was disconnected from a diseased heart, despite the team deeming the procedure necessary and life saving given his outlook.

The weather forecast indicates light rain may occur today with a possible few showers this morning and gradual clearing later in the day. The prior storm dropped 1.74 inches in Long Beach and dumped over 30 inches of snow in Southern California mountains, causing road closures and stranded winter sports fans in San Bernardino sights. Five Die as Mercy Plane Crashes in California
Rescue crews reach the hillside crash site six miles southeast of Pomona. All five aboard perish including John R. Aircraft Mercy Drop Heparin To Ship At Sea
A U S mercy plane successfully dropped four packets of the anti blood clotting drug heparin to the Gen. Mark L. Hersey led ship about 700 miles southwest of Lands End England. The recipient, Sgt Anthony Joseph Gacioch of Middleton Conn, had toenail surgery three weeks ago and faced complications. His condition was reported good tonight after urgent appeal from the ship’s master.

Eyes Shot Out of Informer on Willie Sutton
Arnold Schuster, 28, who identified bank robber Willie Sutton and led to his arrest, was slain in Brooklyn.
