Soviet medical bulletin reports Joseph Stalin's heart faltering and describes grave condition with deteriorating blood pressure and breathing. The note signals possible death within hours as doctors continue treatment for heart failure after a stroke.
London AP reported medical authorities in Britain amazed by Moscow illness bulletins on Stalin. They claim his condition shows little chance of recovery and that doctors used old methods to keep him alive. Western papers split on whether his disappearance sparks world tension or peace, with editorials wary of a third world war and others hoping for an end to the cold war.
The mercury rose to 83 degrees at noon, an all time March 5 high. The previous March 5 record was 80 set in 1940, while the year's high of 87 occurred on February 6 and 7. Los Angeles noon readings were 76. The observer forecast a slightly cooler Friday with mostly clear skies tonight and some early morning fog and high clouds Friday.
In Dayton Ohio a pack of cats and sixteen dogs attacked police as they searched a grubby basement where two men lay dead near a coal furnace. Coroner Robert Zipf said James Marando aged 69 probably died of a heart attack about 48 hours before arrival, and Joseph Tinerding aged 60 died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The government lifted price controls on major household appliances bread bakery items autos and laundry services. The action removes about 25 billion in annual sales from control with appliances refrigerators dishwashers ranges washers driers and freezers plus bakery products and molded plastics. It covers new and used cars parts trucks buses trailers and related auto items with an estimated 12 billion in retail sales.
