Demand for Fence on Oil Pumps Sparks City Hall Protest
About 50 Wilmington and San Pedro residents urged Los Angeles leaders to require fencing around oil pumps after a five year old Wilmington boy died from a mishap at a nearby site. Spokesman William Lawrence of unions urged action and a state wide standard, noting 700 local pumps pose daily risks to children. Witnesses cited a neighbor’s son’s death and a pump near Gulf Avenue School as reasons for safety measures. The council sent the protest to the Public Health and Welfare Committee for study and a possible public hearing.
