Seaside Hospital in Long Beach converted vocational nursing classrooms into wards to ease a critical bed shortage. Administrators report a general shortage across Long Beach hospitals with many patients turned away for two months. They urge registered nurses to call the director of nurses, even for half-time work.
Los Angeles report states Mrs Gladys Peterson wife of City Clerk Walter Peterson was found dead in her bedroom with a gas heater on and windows closed Police said carbon monoxide poisoning suspected The body was discovered by her son Walter Peterson Jr who broke in when unable to wake her
Washington March 1 The National Gallery of Art used large pans to catch water leaking through the roof during heavy rain. Gallery administrator Harry A. McBride asked Congress for funds to fix a skylight and protect its world renowned masterpieces.
Vienna dispatch reports Hungarian women and girls are dissatisfied with mass produced scarlet dresses. At a Budapest conference on ready-made clothing defects, criticism focused on quality and pattern. Women complained patterns were uniform, limiting choice.
Four Long Beach hospitals are listed as approved by the American College of Surgeons in the 34th annual roster of 3352 institutions in the United States Canada and other nations. The facilities are Harriman Jones Clinic and Hospital Community St Marys and Seaside Memorial. Seaside and Community are approved for interne training and Seaside is also a cancer hospital. Seaside has trained interns since 1946 admitting 12 interns and eight residents yearly. Community begins intern training July 1 with three interns, St Marys started in 1951. Harriman Jones is a 48 bed 16 bassinet facility. Community operates 150 beds 30 bassinets. St Marys 250 beds 55 bassinets. Seaside 370 beds 55 bassinets. Community is nonprofit with 2 corporations.
