Bus Lines Patronage in Decline
Long Beach City Lines and Motor Bus Co Lines fell 14.3 percent last year while Los Angeles area mass transit lines declined up to 18.4 percent. California Public Utilities Commission President Peter E. Mitchell said promotional campaigns failed to lift ridership, contributing to higher fares. He noted 16 major California lines carried 56,090,000 fewer riders in 1954 than 1949, with several LA area lines posting sizable declines. Mitchell urged public patronage and warned that private autos siphon traffic, jeopardizing future transit adequacy.
