Radio Cars Save 26 From Flood Near Stockton
A rapid deputy response using radio-equipped cars saved 26 transients from a flood in a dry canal near Stockton. Warning came of a 60 five-foot breach at Hogan Dam in Calaveras County, as workers failed to release water. Deputies rushed to the canal between Stockton and Valley Springs and evacuated tents and parked cars minutes before a wall of water surged into the canal bed. The dam’s storage use this year led to the emergency after four wooden drain plugs were blocked, later weakened by machine gun blasts before finally giving way under pressure.
