McCarthy Slapped Down Over Plan to Steer Big 4 Talks
In a 77 to 4 Senate vote, McCarthy’s bid to force discussion of Russia’s status and Western Europe freedoms was defeated. Capehart pressed McCarthy, while Fulbright labeled the move a service to the Communist Party. Knowland and Hickenlooper attacked the resolution as appeasement.
