Hawaii Stevedores Stand Pat Against Pay Demand
In Honolulu June 21 the Hawaiian stevedoring industry held to its stance against a 32 cent hourly wage increase sought by the longshoremen's union. An employer spokesman Russell Starr said the 8 cent offer aligns with territorywide trends after reviewing 133 union contracts. Starr noted the employers could perhaps afford 12 cents now. The strike neared eight weeks as a 10,000 ton relief cargo prepared in San Francisco for Matson, to be unloaded at prestrike wages. Another industry figure, James Blaisdell, criticized union tactics for injecting extraneous arguments before the fact finding board.
