Five-cent Cigaret Levy Aimed At California Schools
Sacramento June 17 A cent per cigaret tax to fund California schools was proposed to the Legislature today. The Assembly ways and means committee approved the levy as a tax rider to a $25 million bill for distressed school districts, with potential annual yield around $50 000 to $55 000. Part could finance a school-support measure. Other governor tax proposals for balance of the state budget were set aside by committees as the Senate efficiency panel killed a liquor tax plan and an administration proposal to raise about $3.6 million from parimutuel betting.

Final Argument Heard by Jury in Garnier Case
An all-woman jury in Riverside heard final arguments in the Agnes Garnier murder case. Prosecutors argued whether the April 22 killing by Garnier was passion driven manslaughter or premeditated murder, with potential downgrade from first degree. Garnier’s counsel framed the case as a conflict between the Owen family and the Apartment House Owners Association. The 33-year-old divorcee is accused in the death of John E. Owen at his ranch home following a dispute over cocktail glasses from actress Irene Rich. The trial's outcome hinged on whether the jury finds intent or passion, with verdict anticipated later that day.
