More than 500 Allied planes struck Communist troops in a major eight hour assault on the eastern front. Shuttle runs from Sabre bombers Thunderjets Panthers Corsairs Skyraiders and Mustangs pounded a 30 mile square Red-held area with 2,225,000 pounds of bombs and napalm. Smoke rose 9000 feet as the aerial action continued amid a slowing but advancing Red assault.
The Supreme Court refused to stay the executions of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and denied a fourth request to review their trial. They are set to die in Sing Sing's electric chair, with no further federal avenues left. Emmanuel Bloch had planned another clemency bid, while President Eisenhower previously rejected clemency. Demonstrations near the White House drew several thousand supporters, including the Rosenbergs' sons and Julius Rosenberg's mother.
Beverly Hills police report that Lewis Weiss retired Don Lee Broadcasting System chairman aged 60 shot himself today. Wife Sue found the body after Weiss, a Chicago-born executive, had been given six months to live. Weiss built a $9 million radio and TV network and expanded the chain to 45 stations.
Two Des Moines Scouts Bud McIntire and Phil Crowley were found alive in Nakai Canyon Arizona by Navajo trackers with Civil Air Patrol support. Their companions had returned earlier and officials were notified when the youths failed to rejoin the group.
Armed convicts at the New Mexico penitentiary seized Deputy Warden Ralph Tahash and nine guards as hostages. Governor Mechem arrived as riots began about 8 a.m. and police reinforced with tear gas and riot weapons. The uprising seeks firing of Tahash and six guards. talks with the governor were proposed through a barred window.
Larry J. Besand, 4, of 1158 E. Kthot, was hit while crossing near his home and dragged under the wheels of a vehicle driven by Philip Neale Anne, 25. He died at St Marys Hospital from a crushed head and chest. The mother Mrs Geraldine Shellman, 20, and grandmother Mrs Estelle Hendrix witnessed the tragedy. The driver was not cited. The death raises the year's traffic fatalities to 23.

The Fourth District Court of Appeals refused to overturn the August 3 criminal conspiracy trial of poker baron William L. Robertson and 10 accomplices tied to a raid on the Seal Beach Airport Club. Robertson and allies sought a writ of prohibition. they may appeal to the California Supreme Court. The indictment alleges free rides and enticement of patrons to a gambling venue, amid defense claims of insufficient evidence and improper indictment.
A House judiciary subcommittee voted to invite Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark to appear for a public hearing. The probe ties Clark to Kansas City vote fraud and other Justice Department matters from his time as attorney general. Dates suggested were June 18 19 or 20.
Chicago wheat futures fell sharply as weeklong selling pushed prices down. The market dropped about 10 cents per bushel, marking the lowest delivery price since February 14, 1950, with declines of six to nine cents from last Friday.
The Supreme Court voided a five year prison sentence for labor leader Harry Bridges by a 43 vote, ruling the wartime statute of limitations had expired on a 1949 perjury indictment regarding his 1945 naturalization hearing. The decision also set aside a California district court ruling stripping Bridges of U S citizenship, though it may not halt further deportation efforts in a separate case. The majority opinion, written by Justice Burton, held the indictment too late to be effective despite wartime extension, with Justice Reed dissenting and Justices Jackson and Clark not participating.
AP dispatch notes signs of a possible armistice amid a Red offensive in the east. Staff officers draft the buffer zone line while liaisones discuss administrative details for truce talks. Allied preparations include a large prisoner exchange as Lt. Gen. Taylor warns the war may not end with a signing.
Communist planes conducted two passes over Seoul and on the second dropped bombs near the Han River Bridge amid air raid alerts. The Fifth Air Force reported no confirmation of bombing on the fourth night of alerts. Radar tracked two to four planes from the northwest, returning after a 35 minute all clear.
