The Senate rejected Sen Morse’s proposal to seize steel plants under Taft Hartley, voting 54 to 26. Officials say the stance may force Truman to rely on the Taft Hartley Act, though no administration action is imminent, as steelworkers’ strike of 650,000 continues.
The House banking committee approved a full year extension of wage price and rent controls while proposing to end controls on real estate and consumer credit. They also set minimum support prices for six crops and weighed removing administration provisions, with Regulation 4 affecting down payments on new homes and autos. The measures await full Congress action.
Washington June 11 The Senate passed the immigration bill by voice vote and sent it to the White House amid strong opposition claiming it is anti alien After House approval 203 to 53 debate centered on ending racial and sex barriers and tightening alien screening The bill aims to remove restrictions on Orientals and favor skilled immigrants while preserving core institutions according to Sen McCarran and supporters and critics predict a Truman veto or acceptance.
A massive blast on the El Paso natural gas pipeline near Dawn Texas caused a blistering fire visible for 50 miles. The explosion occurred four miles south and four miles east of Dawn shortly after dawn, with no buildings within 0.75 miles. It was unclear if anyone was injured and the fire ended by 10:30 am.
On Koje Island in Korea Communist prisoners of war killed 15 fellow POWs in Compound 77 during a night of terror before surrendering to U N troops for dispersal. American guards recovered eight bodies in a well and found other victims in trenches and wells as POWs resisted dispersal and later cooperated under guard.
President Truman plans a train ride to Groton Connecticut for the dedication of the first atomic powered submarine Nautilus. If weather permits he will return to Washington by air and deliver a speech at 11 a.m. Eastern on all four major networks.
In Los Angeles on June 11 Theodore Oliver Nystul a 37 year old Xray technician allegedly reacted to news of his pending divorce by playing a cowboy game with his 4 year old son Theodore Jr. before shooting the boy with a cap pistol and killing himself a .22 rifle lay across his chest. The bodies were found by his wife Mrs Hedy Nystul 36 who had filed for divorce months earlier then reconciled and separated again.
An earthquake struck San Juan Argentina causing panic as residents fled. The tremor caused one five year old girl to be killed by a collapsing wall and fifteen others injured by crowd trampling. The epicenter was near the Andes Mountains near the Chilean border.
In London on June 11, Prime Minister Churchill told the British Press Association that Britain must swim against the stream to survive economically. He warned of a serious gold and dollar drain, citing a first quarter deficit of 635 million dollars and a reserve around 1.7 billion, amid measures by Chancellor Butler to curb imports and raise rates.
A armored man abducted L B woman Mary Bekken 49 of 28 Granada Ave as she left a downtown cafe. He drove her to the freeway overpass on West Anaheim Street battered her and threatened rape. He stole her purse then fled. Bekken found unconscious and taken to Seaside Hospital with possible skull fracture. Police filed kidnapping and robbery reports.
London reports a British government denial of a Daily Express claim that Klaus Fuchs carried smuggled scientific writings diaries and letters out of prison. Home Office states Fuchs has not been moved from Stafford, is not at Pentonville, and no such diaries or papers have been found.

PANMUNJOM June 11 Allied negotiators backed by a note from Gen Mark W Clark warned the Communists they may walk out again if no concrete proposals arise The North Korean general Nam Tai pressed whether the talks would settle the POW issue by negotiation or massacre He cited the June 10 massacre at Compound 76 on Koose Island as proof of premeditated disruption of the armistice effort

Paul V. Hoffman, adviser to Citizens for Eisenhower, denounced the convention arrangements committee for favoring Gen. Douglas MacArthur as keynote, claiming the move seeks to steamroller Taft. In MERNBERG Germany June 1 1 UP A U S Army court martial found Pvt Richard A Hagelberger 19 of Chula Vista California guilty of murder in the carbine slaying of two German civilians last April The tall wiry soldier heard the verdict without expression The court recessed and will pass sentence tomorrow Hagelberger is the second soldier to be convicted of the slayings on Yonely road near Neustadt His companion Pvt John F Vigneault of Goffs Falls New Hampshire who fired the shots was convicted and sentenced to death on May 22 Vigneault admitted the shooting but said Hagelberger urged him to do it Hagelberger had pleaded innocent
The government approved construction of two new manufacturing plants in the Long Beach area with a total cost of about 6.5 million dollars. Hancock Oil Co plans a 4 million plant for ethylene derivatives while Johns Manville will build a 2.511 million magnesia insulation plant in Watson. Details to be announced by Johns-Manville. the site will employ more workers and integrate with the chemical plant.
Rep Norris Poulson introduced a resolution seeking abandonment of a pending 10 000 unit federal housing program in Los Angeles The representative cited a June 3 vote by Angelenos in favor of canceling the public housing contract with the federal government The measure would urge the public housing administrator to abandon the project pending House and Senate approval.
Secretary of State Acheson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that treaties bring Western Germany into the anti communism alliance without expanding U S power to deploy troops abroad. He said the President could act if dispatching troops would advance U S security, and denied new commitments to aid France in Indochina. The hearing covered peace terms among the United States Britain France and Western Germany and a NATO protocol.
