Hickenlooper criticizes AEC isotope exports to Norway
Senator Hickenlooper charged the Atomic Energy Commission with sending radioactive isotopes to Norway for steel and jet engine research, a move he says deviates from the law. AEC chairman Lilienthal and Commissioner Strauss defended the policy amid Senate hearings, noting prior approvals and disputes within the commission. May shipments to Finland and France were cited as part of broader research efforts, with Lilienthal insisting there was no secret or unlawful information exchange.

A spectacular early morning fire caused an estimated 400000 or more damage to the 502 foot west tower of the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge. Flames fed by oil and timbers turned the tower into a blazing framework, with damage primarily to machinery and scaffolding. Engineers blamed a potential short circuit at the pier base for starting the blaze, potentially delaying completion by months.
