Massed crowds line London streets as Elizabeth II is formally proclaimed queen in a historic coronation. Millions watch via television while 7500 attend the Abbey ceremony. The young queen, 27, appears moved as the royal procession moves from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey and back. The Duke of Edinburgh joins her amid a celebratory spectacle and showers of rain.
The London crowd of over one million braved cold rain to line the six and a half mile coronation route as Elizabeth II prepared for her Westminster Abbey ceremony. Nobles, peers, and royal family members arrived for the ancient rites while news of Everest’s conquest sparks cheers of national pride.

A young Navy man died and a housewife was injured in separate traffic incidents Monday night in Long Beach. Frank Di Pietra, 19, of Los Angeles, a seaman apprentice, died at Seaside Hospital after his car crashed into a light standard on Long Beach Blvd near Bixby Rd. Police say he fell asleep at the wheel. Trene Wood, 45, of 809 Truman Boyd Manor, suffered a compound fracture and facial injuries when struck by a hit-and-run driver at Santa Fe Ave and Wardlow Rd and was treated at Seaside Hospital. Additional injuries occurred in a two-vehicle crash at Anaheim St and Redondo Ave, involving Cordelia Morris, 37, and Nina Morris, 14, plus Jerry Schrutz, 21, of Hollywood. The injured were treated at Community Hospital. Di Pietra’s body was moved to Lakewood Mortuary. The hit-run vehicle was described as a 1946 or 1947 Oldsmobile.
Two year-old David Fernandez fell three stories from a third floor window in Los Angeles. He landed in a hedge and escaped with only scratches and bruises after the fall.
Republican Senators meeting in Washington favored recess or adjournment by July 31 with a 3 to 1 margin. Senate plans discussed include Appropriations bills, oil and gas development on the continental shelf, foreign aid authorization, a 1,000,000 bushel wheat loan to Pakistan, and admitting 240,000 European refugees.
A newborn died in Chicago after doctors revived him with breaths from medical staff when no heartbeat existed. Born Monday at Mt. Sinai Hospital to 19 year old Mrs. Arlyn Solomon, the umbilical cord was twisted. Physicians cut the cord, injected adrenaline, and began resuscitation with a tube. Three doctors and nurses breathed through the tube for hours until a delicate resuscitator was found, but the baby died shortly before noon.
LAS VEGAS The atomic test scheduled for predawn today has been postponed for 48 hours due to unfavorable weather and probable radiation hazard. The 11th and final test of the spring series was delayed because of offsite safety conditions. The device was to be dropped from a plane over Yucca Flat amid prior criticism after fallout from the ninth test.
AFL and CIO leaders announced a no raid agreement to respect each other’s organizing rights as a first step toward merging the two 44,000,000 member unions into a single federation. The pact, pending union approvals, would route organizing disputes to arbitration and take effect January 1 for two years, with ongoing merger talks planned.
