Food Shortages Grow in Poland as Rationing Expands
WARSAW May 31 Poland’s food crisis worsens with longer lines at shops selling rationed goods. The Communist regime has gradually expanded rationing from meat fats and butter to sugar and sweets, creating two classes of cardholders and noncardholders. Card values vary weekly, coupons can be bypassed at higher prices, and special diplomatic coupons offer higher quotas. Industrialization drives disrupted agriculture, shrinking the rural workforce from 61.4 percent in 1931 to 45.75 percent in 1950, while nonagricultural employment rose by 1.2 million from 1949 to 1951 after wartime food surpluses and UNRRA aid.
