Planes Production To Expand As Defense Funds Move
A spokesman said $6.7 billion in new aircraft funding is tied to pending and proposed Congress appropriations, covering about 7000 planes with possible transfers to non Communist allies. Before Korea, the Air Force held 17,000 planes, with 3100 combat units active and plans to grow to 58 groups by next year and 69 by January 1953. Production will be slower than WWII due to larger, more complex modern planes and plant constraints. Major firms receiving intent letters include Lockheed, Douglas, North American, Northrop, and Consolidated Aircraft in California and San Diego.
