U S Veto Questioned to Bar Red Chinese at U N
Washington July 29 two members of the Senate foreign relations committee said the United States should block any move to admit Chinese Communists to the United Nations even if it requires a veto. Senator George D. Ga. urged using the veto to prevent Mao Tsetung representatives from joining the UN. Senator H Alexander Smith of New Jersey pressed Secretary of State Acheson to act clearly to keep the Chinese Communists out. The State Department has held it unwise for the UN to admit Mao's government now but would not veto if a showdown arose. The status left U S diplomats free to maneuver with Jacob Aik taking over as August Security Council chairman. George said Korea shows the North Korean attack is Communist inspired and violates the UN charter, warranting a veto if needed. Smith warned until Russia agrees not to veto, the U S cannot bind itself on major questions. He noted the President ordered forces to defend the Nationalists on Formosa and argued it would be inconsistent to defend Formosa but recognize a rival government in the UN.

Russia to seek UN order for Korean cease fire
Lake Success July 29 Russia likely will urge the United Nations Security Council to order an immediate ceasefire in Korea with both sides halting at current positions. After a ceasefire, Moscow would push for UN mediation between North and South Korea with China as the representatives of the communists. Western powers likely will reject the plan and veto could be possible if new issues arise. A special General Assembly session would then rush necessary action.

China Nationalists Still Excluded From Arms Aid
Washington reports officials say the Chinese Nationalists remain excluded from direct American arms aid. President Truman’s six month policy bars aid to Formosa, while the U S Seventh Fleet actions relate to preventing a communist invasion. No direct grants or allocations from the 75 million dollar fund have been made to the Nationalists. They may buy military supplies with their own funds and have gained U S counsel via MacArthur’s headquarters. Also, Rankin and Jarrett reassigned to strengthen Formosa representation, with Strong returning home for leave.
