Flash Flood Dashes Scout Pack Trip Into Backcountry
Eight Long Beach Explorer Scouts from Post No 112 had camping night interrupted by a flash flood near Red Tahquitz Mountain. Rain turned a narrow stream into a 25 to 30 foot torrent, washing away gear and waking the boys to a soggy dawn. Camp adviser Ray Short recalled gear washed downstream, two boots lost, sleeping bags soaked, as the group survived a 90 minute downpour before continuing their five day hike.

Medici Bones Begin Final Burial Reassembly
Work has started to reassemble bones and skulls of 23 Medici family members in Florence for final burial. Distinct remains include Lorenzo the Magnificent Giovanni delle Bande Nere Alessandro Grand Duke Cosimo I and Eleonora of Toledo. Previously separated skulls were studied at the Institute of Anthropology after objections to separation. Workers began preparing the Medici chapel in Florence's Basilica of St. Lawrence for the reassembled bones.

Flower Begins to Wilt in Soviet Tale of Wrinkled Wife
A Tadzhkistan Communist article recounts Tursonoi Astanakulova’s arranged marriage to Ikram Kayumov in 1942. After four children, he jealously deemed her aged by wrinkles and sought to push her out, prompting a denunciation of Stalinist officials for failing to curb such “feudal practices.” Meanwhile New York reports steel orders exceed mill capacity by up to 200 per cent.
